Throughout Scripture, we see the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in relationship with one another and in their distinct roles in the work of God. Yet this does not mean that God is divided. The Scriptures consistently reveal one God, while showing us the unique relationship and work of the Father and the Son. The Father sends the Son, the Son carries out the Father’s will, and the Son speaks and acts with the authority of God. Jesus declares a unity with the Father that goes far beyond that of a ordinary servant or prophet. As we compare what Scripture says about God with what it says about Jesus, we can see that their distinct roles do not diminish the divine identity of Christ. Rather, they help us understand how the Son can be with the Father, sent by the Father, and yet share the very nature, authority, glory, and works of God.
