Who Is King?
Who is King? is one of the most important questions ever asked. Scripture declares that the LORD alone reigns with absolute authority, yet the New Testament reveals that this divine kingship belongs also to Jesus Christ. He is not merely a king among kings, but the eternal King whose throne rules forever.
God: The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish from His land. (Psa. 10:16)
Jesus: when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will administer justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. (Jer. 23:5-6)
God: The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. (Psa. 29:10)
Jesus: Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government will be upon His shoulders. He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. (Isa. 9:6)
God: You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob. (Psa. 44:4)
Jesus: and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. (Dan. 7:13-14) God: How awesome is the LORD Most High, the King over all the earth! (Psa. 47:2)
Jesus: Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zech. 9:9)
God: Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is King of all the earth; sing profound praises to Him. (Psa. 47:6-7)
Jesus: After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." (Matt 2:1-2)
God: Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.” (Isa. 6:5)
Jesus: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (Matt. 25:34)
God: For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our King. It is He who will save us. (Isa. 33:22)
Jesus: Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (Mark 15:32) God: “I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, and your King." (Isa. 43:15)
Jesus: Pilate also had a notice posted on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but only that He said, 'I am King of the Jews." Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." (John 19:19-21)
God: But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. (Jer. 10:10)
Jesus: and Jason has welcomed them into his home. They are all defying Caesar's decrees, saying there is another king, named Jesus!" (Acts 17:7)
God: Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with Him… On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—the LORD alone, and His name alone… Then all the survivors from the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. And should any families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, then the rain will not fall on them. (Zech. 14:5, 9, 16-17)
Jesus: They will make war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will triumph over them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and He will be accompanied by His called and chosen and faithful ones." (Rev. 17:14)
God: Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Tim. 1:17)
Jesus: and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. (Rev. 1:5)
God: Keep this commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ, which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time. He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. (1 Tim. 6:14-16)
Jesus: Dressed in a robe dipped in blood, His name is The Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in fine linen, follow Him on white horses. From His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Rev. 19:13-16)
Earthly rulers rise and fall, but the Bible reveals a King whose throne is eternal, whose rule is righteous, and whose kingdom will never end. Scripture points to Jesus as the true King over all creation. He is not merely a king among kings, but the King of kings—worthy of all honor, obedience, and worship.
