Our Husband

God reveals His covenant relationship with His people in terms of a husband and His bride. This points to a love that is faithful, intimate, protective and everlasting. The Old Testament repeatedly describes the LORD as the Husband of His people, while the New Testament reveals Jesus as the Bridegroom who loves His church. These passages provide another remarkable connection between the identity of the LORD and the identity of Jesus. The One who is revealed as the Husband of His people is ultimately revealed in Christ, who came to redeem, cleanse, and unite His bride to Himself. His love is demonstrates the depth of God’s covenant love and the saving work accomplished through Jesus.

God: For your husband is your Maker— the LORD of Hosts is His name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.
(Isa. 54:5)

Jesus: I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy.  For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the the serpent's cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.
(2 Cor. 11:2-3)  

God: Behold, the days are coming, declares the  LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land  of Egypt—a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them,
(Jer. 31:31-32).

Jesus: For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure." For the fine linen she wears is the righteous acts of the saints.
(Rev. 19:6-8)

God: In that day,” declares the LORD, “You will call Me ‘my Husband,’ and no longer call Me my Master.'
(Hosea 2:16)

The picture of God as our Husband reveals a love that will never abandon His people. He seeks His bride, remains faithful to His covenant, forgives her unfaithfulness, and desires an everlasting relationship with her. In the New Testament, this same covenant love is displayed to believers through Jesus Christ. Jesus did not merely teach about God’s love—He demonstrated it by laying down His life to redeem His people, The Bridegroom is coming again for His bride, and those who belong to Him will share in an eternal union with Him. What began as a promise throughout Scripture finds its glorious fulfillment in Christ, our Bridegroom and our Lord.
