Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is far more than an impersonal force or influence. Throughout Scripture, He speaks, teaches, guides, comforts, convicts, intercedes, and can even be grieved—revealing the characteristics of a divine Person. He possesses the attributes of God, performs the works of God, and is worshiped alongside the Father and the Son. From the opening verses of Genesis where the Spirit of God moved over the waters, to the closing chapters of Revelation, where the Spirit invites all who thirst to come, the Holy Spirit is actively involved in God’s plan of creation, redemption, and eternal life. The following passages demonstrate that the Holy Spirit is fully divine and eternally united with the Father and the Son, sharing the same nature, authority, and glory.

God: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.  (Gen. 1:1-2)

Jesus: Come near to Me and listen to this: From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time it happened, I was there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.   (Isa. 48:16-17)

God: So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone  like this man, in whom the Spirit of God abides?”  (Gen 41:37)

Jesus: But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God,  then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (Matt 12:28)

God: The LORD said to Moses, “I have called  Bezalel, son of Uri, the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah and have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship,   (Ex. 31:1-3).

Jesus: Truly I tell you, the sons of men will be forgiven of all sins and blasphemies, as many as they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.” Jesus made this statement because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” (Mark: 3:28-30)

God: The Spirit of God has made me. The breath of the Almighty gives me life.  (Job 33:4)

Jesus: The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born  will be called the Son of God.   (Luke 1:35)

God: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me.  (Psa. 51:10-11)

Jesus: They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit was right when He spoke to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him.   (Isa. 6:1-10);  (John 12:41);  (Acts 28:25)

God: Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, O LORD. You hem me in behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me to attain. Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?  (Psa. 139:4-8)

Jesus: However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and  disclosing it to you. Everything that belongs to  the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it  to you. (John 16:13-16)

Jesus: Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ for forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  This promise belongs to you and your children  and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord  our God will call to Himself.”  (Acts 2:38-39)

God: But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy, and He Himself fought against them.  (Isa. 63:10) Jesus: Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood. (Acts 20:28)

God: Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come. (Matt 12:32)   Jesus: You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.    (Rom. 8:9)

God: They were worshiping the Lord and fasting when the Holy Spirit said, “Send Barnabas and Saul for the work which I have called them.” After fasting and praying, they laid their hands  on them and sent them off. Barnabas and Saul, sent by the Holy Spirit, went to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. At Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.   (Acts 13:2-4)

Jesus: For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment. For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.  (1 Cor. 2:11-16)

God: Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven filling the whole house where they were. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit.  (Acts 2:2-4)

It is only the third hour of the day! No, this was spoken by the prophet Joel: "I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy..   (Acts 2:14-16)

Jesus: the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.   (Gal. 3:14)

God: Peter said, “Ananias, how is it Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? Did it not belong to you before it was sold? Afterward, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”   (Acts 5:3,4)

Jesus: God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, you are also an heir through God.  (Gal. 4:6-7)

God: You are controlled not by flesh, but Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.  (Rom. 8:9,11)

Jesus: through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, my distress will turn out for my deliverance.   (Phil. 1:19)

God: For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who  are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!" The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. (Rom. 8:13-16)

Jesus: according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.  (1 Peter 1:2)

Jesus: Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully, trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. Even angels long to look into these things.  (1 Pet. 1:10-12)

God: no prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were  carried along by the Holy Spirit.  (2 Pet. 1:21)

Jesus: Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully, trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them (the prophets) that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.  (1 Pet. 1:10-12)

The testimony of Scripture leaves no doubt that the Holy Spirit is God. He is eternal, omnipresent (everywhere), omniscient (all knowing), and all powerful (omnipotent). He gives life, inspires Scripture, sanctifies believers, distributes spiritual gifts, and dwells within God’s people. These are works that belong to God alone. Together, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are revealed throughout the Bible as one God, working in perfect unity to accomplish His eternal purposes. As you study these passages, you will grow in your understanding of the Holy Spirit’s divine nature and His faithful work in revealing Christ, transforming believers, and glorifying God forever.
