Although the name “Jesus” is not found in the Old Testament, Christ is revealed throughout its pages. The Old Testament points forward to Him through prophecy, divine titles, His works, His appearances, and the words spoken by and about Him. What may appear at first to be passages concerning God alone are often brought into clearer understanding by the New Testament, which identifies Jesus Christ with the One revealed in those Scriptures.
Jesus Himself taught that the Scriptures testify of Him (John 5:39). After His resurrection, He explained to His disciples the things concerning Himself “in all the Scriptures,” beginning with Moses and continuing through the Prophets (Luke 24:27, and 44). The Old Testament therefore provides an important foundation for understanding who Christ is and His relationship to God.
As we examine these passages, we can see a consistent biblical testimony: the Christ revealed in the New Testament is not separate from the God revealed in the Old Testament, but is intimately identified with Him. The Scriptures invite us to look beyond the surface and recognize the One who was present and active long before His incarnation in Bethlehem.
