“I Am” Is His Name
“I Am” at first doesn’t seem to make sense, as if it is in the middle of a sentence that has no beginning or end. But the name “I Am” reveals God as the eternal One-the One who simply is without beginning or end.
God: Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.” God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation. (Ex. 3:13-15)
Jesus: Again the high priest questioned Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"“I am,”said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” (Mark 14:62)
Jesus: our father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” “Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am! At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area. (John 8:56-59)
Jesus applied this divine title to Himself, identifying Himself with the eternal God.
