Who to Serve

God alone is proclaimed in the Bible as worthy to be served, honored, obeyed, and followed. The Father also presents Jesus Christ as One who is to be served. Throughout Scripture God is the divine authority, yet He shares that honor with His Son.

God: So you shall serve the LORD your God, He will bless your bread and your water.   (Ex 23:25)

God: Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.
(Deut. 6:13)

Jesus: In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
(Dan. 7:1 ,14)

God: And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD,   because He is our God!”
(Josh. 24:18)

God: ‍ ‍“Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’
(Matt 4:10),   (Luke 4:8)

Jesus: ‍ ‍and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
(Mark 10:44-45)

The question of who we are to serve is ultimately a question of who has divine authority over our lives. Scripture in the Old Testament repeatedly commands God’s people to serve the LORD. Yet Jesus is presented as the Lord whom His followers are called to serve, though Jesus teaches that we should serve Him by serving each other.
