The Branch
“The Branch” is a prophetic title pointing to the coming Messiah. From the line of David, God promised that a righteous Branch would spring forth-One chosen by God to reign in wisdom, righteousness, and peace.
Jesus: Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him - the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear, but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth and slay the wicked with the breath of His lips. Righteousness will be the belt around His hips, and faithfulness the sash around His waist. (Isa 11:1-5)
God: Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will administer justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. (Jer. 23:5-6)
Jesus: “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, then you will govern My house and will also have charge of My courts; and I will give you a place among these who are standing here. Hear now, O high priest Joshua, you and your companions seated before you, who are indeed a sign. Behold, I am going to bring My servant, the Branch. (Zech. 3:8)
The prophets foretold a coming Branch of the Old Testament and Jesus Christ of the New Testament, and are revealed as one and the same, bringing redemption to all who trust in Him.
