His Witnesses

Witnesses are called to testify to what they have seen, heard, and know to be true. God Himself bears witness concerning His identity and His works, while the New Testament records the apostles and others bearing witness concerning Jesus. Their testimony is not presented as a separate message from God, but as a powerful testimony to who Jesus is and what He has done. As we examine these passages, we see the remarkable agreement between the witness of God and the witness concerning His Son.

God: But now, this is what the LORD says— He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine! “You are,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will  come. I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no Savior but Me. I alone decreed and saved and proclaimed—I, and not some foreign god among you. So you are My witnesses," declares the LORD, “that I am God. Even from eternity I am He, and none can deliver out of My hand.
(Isa. 43:1, and 10-13)  

Jesus: until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen…So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will beMy witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away. When they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. With one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

The testimony of Scripture is clear and consistent. God bears witness to the truth, and His witnesses to the truth, and His witnesses testify to Jesus, His identity, His works, and His glory. Their testimony points us beyond a mere human teacher or prophet to the One whom God Himself has revealed. Through the witness recorded in Scripture, we are given reason to believe, to trust, and to recognize the divine identity of Jesus Christ.
