Who Will Judge Us?
Scripture makes it clear that every person will one day stand before a righteous Judge. Human courts may fail, but God’s judgment is perfect, holy, and impartial. The Bible reveals that the One appointed to judge the world is not merely a prophet, angel, or created being, but Christ the Lord Himself.
God: The LORD abides forever; He established His throne for judgment. He judges the world with justice; He governs with equity. (Psa. 9:7-8)
Jesus: The LORD said to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. The Lord is at Your right hand; He will crush kings in the day of His wrath. He will judge nations, heaping up the dead; He will crush the leaders far and wide. (Psa. 110:1, 5-6)
God: And the heavens proclaim His righteousness, for God Himself is Judge. (Psa. 50:6) Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the LORD, for He is coming— He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in His faithfulness. (Psa. 96:12-13)
Jesus: Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself. And He has given Him authority to execute judgement, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. (John 5:22-30)
God: Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy before the LORD, for He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with equity. (Psa. 98:8-9)
Jesus: As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. (John 12:47-48)
God: For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our King. It is He who will save us. (Isa. 33:22)
Jesus: God raised Him up on the third day and caused Him to be seen—after He rose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that He is the One appointed by God to judge the living and the dead. (Acts 10:40-42)
God: O LORD of Hosts, who judges righteously, who examines the heart and mind, let me see Your vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause. (Jer. 11:20)
Jesus: Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all people everywhere to repent. For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31)
God: The law will go forth from Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Then He will judge between many peoples and arbitrate for strong nations far and wide. (Micah 4:2-3)
Jesus: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Cor. 5:10)
God: God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. If you judge others, yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? (Rom. 2:2-3)
Jesus: on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Christ Jesus, as proclaimed by my gospel. (Rom. 2:16)
God: Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why do you belittle your brother? We will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.” So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. (Rom. 14:10-12)
Jesus: I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His kingdom… (2 Tim. 4:1).
God: in joyful assembly, to the congregation of the firstborn, enrolled in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, (Heb. 12:23).
Jesus: From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day— and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing. (2 Tim. 4:8)
God: Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, be in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners. (Peter 1:17)
Jesus: And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they upheld. And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge those who dwell upon the earth and avenge our blood?” (Rev. 6:9-10) God: I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. I saw the dead, great and small, before the throne. And books were opened. One of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead. Death and Hades gave up their dead; each one was judged according to his deeds. (Rev. 20:11-13)
Jesus: When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (Matt. 25:31-34)
God and the Lamb (Son): Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it? (Rev. 6:15-17)
God: And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.” And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life. The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.” (Rev. 21:5-7)
Jesus: “Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me to give to each one according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the end.” “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star.” “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! (Rev. 22:12-13, and 16)
Jesus Christ declared that all judgment has been committed to the Son, and the apostles proclaimed that He will judge both the living and the dead in righteousness. The One who was pierced, rejected, and crucified will return in glory as Judge over all mankind. This page examines the Scriptures that reveal who will judge us and what that reveals about the identity, authority, and divine nature of Jesus Christ.
