The Shepherd
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as the Shepherd-One who guides, protects, provides for, and faithfully cares for His people. Unlike a distant ruler, the Shepherd is near, attentive to every need, and committed to leading His flock in the paths of righteousness.
Jesus: ‘But you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.’ (Matt. 2:6) and (Micah 5:2)
God: The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1)
Jesus: I am the good shepherd. He lays down His life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs way. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock. The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and they know Me, just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. I lay down My life for My sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd. (John 10:11-16)
God: Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and His arm establishes his rule. His reward is with Him, and His recompense accompanies Him. He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. (Isa. 40:10-11)
Jesus: Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, (Heb. 13:20)
God: For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out. As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep when he is among the flock, so I will look for My flock. (Ezek. 34:11-12)
Jesus: For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd. (Rev. 7:17)
God: For this is what the Lord GOD says, “Behold, I will tend My flock and make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, bring back the strays, bind up the broken, and strengthen the weak; but the sleek and strong I will destroy. I will shepherd them with justice.” This is what the Lord GOD says to you, My flock: ‘I will judge between one sheep and another, between the rams and the goats. (Ezek. 34:15-17)
This imagery speaks of both tender compassion and strong leadership, showing God as both guardian and guide. In the New Testament, this role is beautifully fulfilled and embodied in Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, calling them by name and leading them into eternal life.
