The Rock / Stone
God: For I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Ascribe greatness to our God! He is the Rock, His work is perfect; His ways just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He (vs. 3-4). But Jeshurun (Israel) grew fat and kicked—becoming fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation (vs. 15). You ignored the Rock who brought you forth. You forgot the God who gave you birth (vs. 18). How could one man pursue a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? For their rock is not like our rock, even our enemies concede. (Deut. 32:3-4,15,18,30-31)
Jesus: Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes?" (Matt. 21:42) The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the LORD, and it is marvelous in our eyes. (Psa. 118:22)
God: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my stronghold. (Psa. 18:2) and (2 Sam. 22:1-3) The LORD lives and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted (2 Sam. 22:47).
Jesus: Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone. (Ephes. 2:20)
God: The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be dreaded. And He will be a sanctuary—but to both houses of Israel a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, (Isa 8:13-14)
Jesus: As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight, you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: a chosen and precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” To you who believe then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” (1 Pet. 2:4-8)
God: In God alone my soul finds rest; He alone is my rock and salvation. (Psa. 62:1-2) They remembered God was their rock. The Most High God their redeemer. (Psa. 78:35) He will call to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock of my salvation.’ (Psa. 89:26)
Jesus: I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock accompanying them, and that rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 10:1-5)
Throughout Scripture, God is revealed as the Rock—the unshakable foundation, refuge, and strength of His people. He is the Stone rejected by men, yet chosen and precious in the sight of God. He is the Rock of salvation, the cornerstone laid in Zion, and the spiritual Rock from which life flows.
The prophets, psalmists, and apostles all point to this enduring truth: what was spoken of the LORD in the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. In every storm and generation, those who build upon Him stand secure forever.
