The Light

Light reveals, guides, gives life, and drives away darkness. Throughout Scripture, God is called the everlasting Light of His people, and Jesus declared Himself to be the Light of the world.

God: Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent,  (Psa. 104:1-2).

Jesus: For I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and My God is My strength—He says, “It is not enough for You to be My Servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the protected ones of Israel. I will also make You a light for the nations, to bring My salvation to the ends of the earth."  (Isa. 49:5-6)

God: No longer will the sun be your light by day, nor the brightness of the moon shine on your night; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your splendor.  (Isa. 60:19)

Jesus: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.  (John 1:1-4)

God: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.  (James 1:17)

Jesus: The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.  (John 1:9-13)

God: And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. (1 John 1:5)

Jesus: Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”   (John 8:12)

God: But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp.  By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory. (Rev. 21:22-24)

Jesus: Then Jesus told them“For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not over-take you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going, while you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness. (John 12:36-27 and 46)

God: There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.   (Rev. 22:5)

Jesus: we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.  (1 John 1:6)

From the first words spoken in creation - “Let there be light”-to the glory of the New Jerusalem where the Lamb is its lamp, the Bible consistently reveals the divine nature of God through the imagery of light. This study explores how the titles and attributes of “The Light” belong to both Yahweh and Jesus Christ, revealing the glory, truth, holiness, and saving power of the One who shines in the darkness that cannot be overcome.
