Our Husband

In the Old Testament, the Lord speaks of Himself as the Husband of Israel, expressing His faithful love, protection, and commitment, despite their unfaithfulness. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is revealed as the Bridegroom of the church, lovingly preparing His bride for eternal union with Him.

God: For your husband is your Maker—The LORD of Hosts is His name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.  (Isa. 54:5)

Jesus: I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ. (2 Cor. 11:2-3)

God: Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them,  (Jer. 31:31-32).

Jesus: For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure." For the fine linen she wears is the righteous acts of the saints.  (Rev. 19:6-8)

God: In that day,” declares the LORD, “You will call Me ‘my Husband,’ and no longer call Me my Master.'   (Hosea 2:16)

Under the old covenant, justification and covenant standing were primarily connected to Israel as God’s covenant people. Yet even in the Old Testament, God hinted that His salvation would one day reach all nations. (Gen. 12:3) and (Isa. 49:6) Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also.” Through Jesus, we are now ‘fellow heirs’ with believing Jews through faith in Christ. Gentiles, who were once “afar off,” are now brought near by the blood of Christ. (Eph. 2:13)
