His Commands

God gives commands that reveal His authority and His divine will. But Jesus also speaks with this same authority, giving commands that His followers are called to obey. His words are not presented simply as the teachings of a prophet or teacher, but as the commands of the Son of God who also has divine authority. The following passages reveal the significance of His commands and point to the unique authority Jesus possesses.

God: You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. You shall not bow down to them or worship them: for I, the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate  Me, but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
(Ex. 20:3-6)

Jesus: ‍ ‍Jesus declared“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
(Matt. 22:37-40)

God: ‍ ‍The Ten commandments
(Deut. 5:7-21)

Jesus: ‍ ‍Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him.”
(John 14:21)

God: The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
(Deut. 5:22)

‍Jesus:‍ ‍If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and remain in His love. I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you.
(John 15:10-14)

God: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who directs you in the way you  should go. If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.
(Isa. 48:17-18)

Jesus: There are at least fifty other commands of Christ in the gospels.

Jesus did not only teach people about God; He spoke with the authority of God. His commands called for obedience, faith, love, and complete devotion. Scripture presents His words as carrying divine authority, and His followers are called to receive and obey them. His commands reveal more than wisdom of a great teacher—they reveal the authority of the Son of God and provide another testimony to His divine identity.
