Calming the Storm
The account of Jesus calming the storm reveals far more than His compassion for His frightened disciples. By speaking and instantly bringing the raging waters into perfect calm, Jesus demonstrates the same divine authority that Scripture attributes to the LORD.
God: Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. (Psa. 170:28)
Jesus: Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was being swamped. But Jesus was in the stern sleeping on the cushion, So they woke Him and said, “Teacher, don’t You care that we are perishing?” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. “Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm. “Why are you so afraid?” He asked, “Do you still have no faith?” Overwhelmed with fear, they asked one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:39)
God: Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart. (Jonah 1:4) Now the sea was growing worse and worse,, so they said to Johah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?” “Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you.” (Johah 1:11-12) Then they picked up Johah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm. (Jonah 1:15)
The disciples asked, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” The miracle of calming the storm stands as another testimony that Jesus possesses the power and divine nature of God Himself.
